In vitro fertilization (IVF) is an easy and pleasant process, said no one ever. IVF is challenging, both physically and emotionally, and can take a toll on a person’s wellbeing. It can also put a large amount of stress on a marriage or partnership, both financially and emotionally. This is not to discourage anyone who is considering IVF, but this is a process and procedure that should not be taken lightly.
Fortunately, there are ways to make it through this process with a smile on your face and your emotional well being intact. Hopefully, if you follow these suggestions, you’ll get through IVF unscathed and, ideally, with a beautiful baby on the way. Here’s how to stay healthy and happy during this time:
Arm yourself with knowledge and information
As with anything else in life, preparation is vital. Learn about the process itself, possible side effects, and success rates. When you head into IVF knowing as much as you can about it, then you can be more emotionally ready for what’s to come. When you know what will happen, you can better prepare yourself for it. Make sure to ask your doctor any questions you might have. Ensure that your partner talks to the doctor and brings up any concerns he or she might be worried about. When you are armed with the information you need, you’ll better manage your expectations, emotions, and be more prepared for this phase of your life.
Find the support you need
Some women prefer to keep this journey private, while others prefer to open up to others who may have gone through IVF themselves. You may decide to confide in one or two of your closest friends or even join an IVF support group. You could keep a private journal where you write down your thoughts and feelings. Be sure you get the emotional support you need. If you have a partner, keep communication lines open and be receptive to their thoughts and feelings. Although only one person physically goes through the actual procedure, if you have a spouse or partner doing this with you, you are on this journey together. Support is critical in being able to get through this challenging process as smoothly as possible.
Simplify your life during this time
This is not the time to make other major life-changing decisions. Switching careers, moving homes, or getting more responsibilities at work are definitely not recommended during this time. IVF is a significant process on its own, so it’s best to simplify your life in other areas, or at least stick to the routine you’re already used to. Some women choose to take some time off from work to lessen other stress sources in their lives. This may not be a viable option for most women, but it’s best to try to keep things as simple as possible during this time. Save your energy for IVF and not for new complications in the other parts of your life.
Prepare yourself for all outcomes
IVF can result in a beautiful new chapter in your life, or it can be a disappointing setback in your pregnancy journey. Although there are success stories, there are also cases that do not have a happy ending. Once you’ve done all you can and followed your doctor’s orders and recommendations, try to relax and let go. Know and understand that it can go both ways. When you are waiting for your pregnancy test results, make sure you put self-care first. Treat yourself to something that makes you happy, whether it’s a dinner with friends or a doctor-approved spa day. This will help prepare yourself emotionally for what the results might be. You should also decide the next steps if needed. For example, what if your first round of IVF is unsuccessful? Will you do another? If yes, when? If you decide not to do another round, be sure of your decision.
Going through IVF can be challenging, but there are several ways to stay positive and take things in stride. Remember, this is just one phase of your life. Even if it is unsuccessful, you can choose to try again. You can also decide that one round is enough.
